Group Swim Lessons 2023: 


Group classes will last 30 minutes Monday through Thursday for two weeks. If the air temperature is above 60°F and there is no lighting, lessons will happen. This is due to extremely limited make up dates. 

Register

  • Registration will open on Wednesday, March 15th, 2023 both Online and at the Community Center.
  • Make sure your swimmer is placed in the correct level by reading the exit skills. If there is a skill your swimmer cannot confidently complete, that is the level to place them in. 
  • Complete a Group Lesson Registration Form if registering at Community Center or Bonner Springs Aquatic Park.

Level Descriptions and Exit Skills:



Preschool:

Level 1 (3-5 yrs):

 
Swimmers are taught to feel comfortable in the water using assisted skills. Each child must be at least 3 years old before the first class. 

Swimmers will learn to get comfortable in the water. Learning bobbing, going under water, supported glide, supported front and back float, flutter kick, and jumping in. This level is meant to help participants become comfortable in the water. 

Complete Level 1 by blowing bubbles, submerge face independently and jumping into waist deep water.


Level 2 (3-5yrs or passed Level 1): 
Swimmers are taught to feel comfortable in the water. Each child must be at least 3 years old before the first class, OR have passed Level 1 to register.

Swimmers will be introduced to the basic fundamentals of swimming. Swimmers will begin independently rolling from front to back and back to front, front and back float, and pencil jumps, and will be introduced  introduced to freestyle arms, backstroke arms and kick boards. This level is very similar to Level 1, but requires swimmers to complete the skills unassisted. 

Complete Level 2 by:

  • Stepping or jumping from the side into chest deep water, pushing off the bottom, moving into a treading or floating position for 15 seconds, then swim on front/back for 5 body lengths, and exit the water 
  • Float for 15 seconds, roll to front, then recover to a vertical position (stand-up).
  • Push off the wall & swim using combined arm & leg actions on front for 5 body lengths, roll to back, float for 15 seconds, roll to front, then continue swimming for 5 body lengths (swimmers can be assisted on this exit skill)

6yrs old & up:


Level 3 (6 & up):
Each child must be at least 6 years old before the first class, OR have passed Level 2.

Swimmers will learn the basics of freestyle and backstroke, how to independently kick with kick with a board, be introduced to the elementary back stroke, introduced to  treading. 

Complete Level 3 by: 

  • Enter the water independently using either the ramp, steps or side. Travel at least 5 yards, bob 5 times, then safely exit the water.
  • Glide on front for at least 2 body lengths, roll to a back float for 5 seconds, and recover to a vertical position. 


Level 4 (6 & up):
Child must be at least 6 years old and able to perform skills in Level 3.

Swimmers will develop their freestyle, backstroke, floating. Swimmers will be introduced to rotary breathing and swim-float-swim. This level is similar to Level 3, but requires swimmers to swim further distances and develop skills to a higher level.  

Complete Level 4 by:

  • Step from side into chest deep water, push off the bottom, move into a treading or floating position for at least 15 seconds, swim on front and/or back for 5 body lengths, then exit the water.
  • Move into a back float for 15 seconds, roll to front then recover to a vertical position.
  • Push off & swim using combined arm & leg actions on front for 5 body lengths, roll to back, float for 15 seconds, toll to front, then continue swimming for 5 body lengths.


Level 5 (6 & up):
Child must be at least 6 years old and able to perform skills in Level 4.

Swimmers will develop their freestyle, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, breaststroke skills. Swimmers will also be introduced to rotary breathing for long distances, diving, the scissor kick. 

Complete Level 5 by:

  • Jump into deep water from side, recover to the surface, maintain position by treading of floating for 1 minute, rotate to stomach or back, swim 25 yards of either freestyle or elementary backstroke, and exit the water
  • Push off in a streamlined position from the wall and then swim freestyle for 15 yards, change position and direction as necessary, swim elementary backstroke for 15 yards, then exit the water.

Level 6 (6 & up):
Child must be at least 6 years old and able to perform skills in Level 5.

Swimmers will learn distance swimming for freestyle, backstroke and elementary backstroke. Swimmers will be introduced to distance swimming for breaststroke, dolphin kick, and butterfly. Swimmers will develop their dives.

Complete Level 6 by:

  • Performing a feetfirst entry into deep water, swimming freestyle for 25 yards, then change direction and position as necessary to swim backstroke for 15 yards
  • Submerge and swim a distance of 3 to 5 body lengths underwater w/o hyperventilating, return to surface, then exit the water. 


Level 7 (6 & up):

Child must be at least 6 years old and able to perform skills in Level 6.

Swimmers will continue to develop their dives, flip turns, breaststroke, backstroke, freestyle, elementary backstroke, & butterfly. 

Complete Level 7 by:

  • Performing a shallow-angle dive into water at least 9 feet, swim front crawl for 50 yards, then swim elementary backstroke 50 yards using appropriate and efficient turning styles throughout.
  • Swim breast stroke for 25 yards, change direction of travel as necessary and then swim back crawl for 25 yards using appropriate and efficient turning styles throughout. 


Level 8 (6 & up):


Child must be at least 6 years old and able to perform skills in Level 7.

Swimmers will learn distance swimming for freestyle, backstroke and elementary backstroke. Swimmers will be introduced to distance swimming for breaststroke, dolphin kick, and butterfly. Swimmers will develop their dives.

Complete Level 8 by:

  • Swim 500 yards continuously using any 3 strokes, swimming laps at least 50 yards of each stroke. 
  • Preform a feetfirst surface dive, retrieve a object from the bottom of the pool at a depth of 7 to 10 feet, return to surface, then back to starting point 


Private Swim Lessons


Private swim lessons are for all ages and offer a one-on-one approach for learning to swim. Private lessons are tailored to the swimmer's personal goals and needs and are by appointment only. Lessons last 30 minutes.


Register


  • Complete a Private Swim Lesson Registration Form
  • Registration opens Tuesday, 05/30/2023 at the Aquatic Park Front Desk.
  • Private lessons are not available for online registration. This is to ensure that there is an instructor.

Private Swim Lesson Cost (Bonner Springs Residents)


  • $20 per lesson
  • $55 - 3 Lesson Package (save $5)

  • $25 per lesson

Swim Lesson Rules & Guidelines



  • Participants and their families need to check in at the front desk. 
  • Only Registered Participants are allowed in the water
  • Please consider having your participant use the restroom before lessons start. 
  • Participants need to wait for their instructor before entering the water. 
  • Parents are asked to stay near the facility during their participants lesson. 
  • Please wash and disinfect your swim suit if you have swam in a lake prior to lessons.
  • Goggles and hair ties are allowed. 
  • Please keep chairs off of the grass. 
  • If you have concerns about a class please talk with the instructor before or after class or contact Nathan at (913) 422-7242.
  • Swim Lessons may happen even the pool is closed for the day (i.e. low temp or rain). This is because there are limited make up opportunities. There will be no refunds for issues outside of staffs control (i.e. weather, afr, etc.). 
  • Please keep your participant(s) home if they are sick. Especially if they have loose or uncontrollable bowel movements. 
  • All other BSAP rules need to be followed.
