August 11th is Safe Digging Day

National Safe Digging Day is August 11, emphasizing the importance of dialing 811 to have underground utility lines marked for free before you dig. "Call Before You Dig" is a law that applies at all times, to homeowners and contractors to have utility lines marked whether you are setting a fence post, building a deck, planting a tree or excavating a basement.

Call 811 before you begin any project. This free service arranges for a professional to mark the location of underground utility lines with flags, spray paint or both. Just call at least two days before you dig.
Every six minutes an underground utility is damaged because someone didn't call 811. Just nicking an underground wire or pipe can create expensive repair bills and heavy fines for the person or company digging. Some underground lines have the potential for extensive property damage or serious personal injury.

There are millions of miles of buried utilities beneath the surface of the earth that are very important to everyday living - like water, electricity and natural gas. The risk can be just inches below the surface - utility lines that are buried can change due to erosion, previous digging and changing terrain. You can save yourself a lot of time and money just by calling 811 two to five days before you plan to dig.
