Trash and Recycling Rules and Regulations for Curbside Trash Pickup Revised September 2008
Trash collection services are provided to Bonner Springs residents through a contract with Deffenbaugh Industries. All businesses are required to seek out contracts with any provider and may not place business waste in residential trash. To help keep prices low and keep efficient service, please abide by the following regulations for the disposal of your trash:
Time of Collection
Normal collection days and hours in Bonner Springs are Monday and Tuesday 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. In addition, there are seven holidays when trash is not picked up. New Years Day, Martin Luther King, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas. Should one of these holidays fall on or before your normal pick-up day, your waste will be picked up one (1) day later that week, all other holidays trash will be picked up as normal. General Rules
- Garbage or trash should be in plastic bags (35 pounds or less) or a container (50 gallons or less) with adequate handles for lifting and a tight fitting lid.
- Contents in containers placed out for pickup must weigh less than 75 pounds. Bags that are too heavy to lift (over 35 pounds) without tearing will be left. Bulky items such as large household furniture, beds, chairs, etc., must be set three feet (3') or closer to the curb for collection on your regular pickup day.
- City regulations require bags to be tied and large empty boxes to be flattened and bundled. There is no limit on bags of grass or leaves.
- Place all items three feet (3') or closer to the curb for collection.
- Place refuse outside of any enclosure and at ground level. No refuse to be placed on vehicles.
- Trash containers should not exceed 50 gallons. The preferred method of refuse collection is bags.
- It shall be unlawful for a person, owner, owner's agent or occupant to set out or allow to be set out any garbage or trash for collection before 4:00 P.M. of the day prior to the day of collection or allow to remain at or near the curb (including emptied trash cans) after 7:00 A.M. on the day after scheduled for collection.
- Curb Side Pickup - The city's contract requires pick up of refuse from the curb side. If a resident is disabled, Deffenbaugh will pick up the trash from the front of the residence for a short time until arrangements can be made for a family or neighbor to get the trash to the curb.
- Trash misses or complaints should be called in directly to Deffenbaugh Customer Serivce at 631-3300, then dial 3 for Residential Service. If you experience a continued problem with trash service or have other complaints regarding your trash service, please call the following numbers in the City Clerk's office 913-667-1720 or 913-667-1716.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS:
- Tree limbs or carpet/rugs must be tied in bundles of four feet (4') long or less, 75 pounds or less and no larger than 18 inches in diameter. Individual tree limbs should not exceed 4 inches.
- Tires and rims will be picked up if the tire is dismounted from the rim and both set at the curb. The limit is ten (10) per year.
- Please arrange a special pickup (Thursdays only) for large appliances that have refrigerants, such as refrigerators, air conditioners and freezers by calling 913-631-3300, Dial 3 for Residential Customer Service or call the City Clerk's Department 913-667-1720 or 913-667-1716 if there is a problem.
- Construction or demolition materials are not to be placed out with your regular trash and require special pickups. Call 631-3300. Deffenbaugh Disposal will charge the resident for this service. Residents have the option to take items to the landfill, but will be charged a fee.
- Christmas trees 6 feet or less or cut in lengths of 6 feet or under and bundled will be picked up when placed out with regular household trash.
- Hot water heaters emptied and placed at the curb will be picked up on regular trash day.
- Automotive parts will not be picked up.
