The City also has an ordinance that prohibits any person from allowing animals or fowl under his or her control to run at large. The Animal Control Officer provides the following services:
Business Education Programs are available to address special crime problems that involve businesses. We can assist you and your employees in detecting counterfeit currency, meeting the District Attorney’s guidelines for worthless checks, making your business a harder target for burglars and thieves, and help you put in place a system to reduce crimes against businesses throughout the community. For more information contact: Detective Vicki Fogarty: vickiefogarty@bonnersprings.org. The Police Department offers child safety seat inspections. We check to ensure that your child safety seat is property installed. If your group or organization is interested in co-sponsoring a child safety seat inspection, contact Officer Dennis Cox. Citizens Police Academy/Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) The Citizen’s Police Academy is a chance for citizens to see the how and why of police service. It is an excellent opportunity to get to know the members of your Police Department. This year, the academy is geared toward volunteers who want to help the Police Department. Volunteers will be learning how to help write reports, answer phones, and assist with traffic control for special events, among other things. This is an excellent opportunity for you to help your community. For more information contact Lt. Rick Schubert, (913) 422-7800, rschubert@bonnersprings.org. The Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) Program is a nationally recognized program that educates grade school students to resist drugs and violence. Officer Pat Budy teaches students in the elementary schools to grow up drug free, patrickb@bonnersprings.org. Occasionally, the Bonner Springs Police Department conducts D.U.I. Check Lanes. During a D.U.I. Check Lane, all vehicles traveling in a certain direction on a particular roadway are pulled to the side of the road and checked for signs of Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs. The intrusion is minimal and the check lanes often result in several alcohol and non-alcohol related arrests. The Bonner Springs Police Department is pleased to serve the community by offering fingerprinting services, free of charge, to the community. We offer this service on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month between the hours of 4 pm and 6 pm. Contact the Police Department at 422-7800 to sign up. Identi-kid is a program where we fingerprint and video tape your children for use if they are ever lost or missing. You retain all copies of the prints and tapes. If your group or organization is interested in co-sponsoring an Identi-kid session, contact Detective Patrick Budy, (913) 422-7800, patrickb@bonnersprings.org. Do you want to get involved in a volunteer program to help reduce crime in your neighborhood? Organizing or joining a Neighborhood Watch Group is one of the best ways to do that. Neighborhood Watch is an organized way to be a good neighbor, report suspicious activity in your area, and meet with your neighbors on a regular basis. Contact Sergeant Mark Zaretski, (913) 422-7800, mzaretski@bonnersprings.org if you are interested in forming a Neighborhood Watch Group in your area. Operation ID is a program that identifies your belongings if they are ever stolen and then recovered. By engraving a unique number on items such as tools, electronics and other items of value, you have improved your chances of recovering the items. Engravers are available at the Police Department to mark your belongings. Overweight Truck Enforcement and Truck inspection Some officers specialize in overweight truck enforcement and truck inspection in an effort to help keep the streets safe. An overweight truck or a truck with safety violations damages the roadways and jeopardizes the safety of other drivers on the roads. If you are leaving town and would like to have the police keep an eye on your home, call and request a Property Watch. This is also an excellent way to leave us with some emergency phone numbers in the event of an emergency at your home. The School Resource Officer Program places a specially trained Police Officer on campus at the high school and middle school. Officer Tim Pierce, timp@bonnersprings.org, has had a significant impact in reducing crime on campus and has helped educate students in law enforcement matters. City of Bonner Springs |
