Mission

To ensure the orderly and efficient development of the city through effective administration of the Comprehensive Plan, Zoning Ordinance and Subdivision Regulations.

Committee Support

Two committees provide support to the Planning Department:

  • Planning Commission – The nine members of the Planning Commission are appointed at large by the mayor with the approval of the City Council. Meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday of each month, 7:00 p.m. at City Hall. Their purpose is to adopt and amend regulations governing development, land use, and zoning requirements and to approve planning documents.
  • Board of Zoning Appeals – The five members of the Board of Zoning Appeals are appointed at large by the mayor with the approval of the City Council. Meetings are held on an as-needed basis. Their purpose is to consider appeals and variances to official decisions pertaining to the city’s zoning requirements.

Neighborhood Revitalization Property Tax Rebate Programs

The Neighborhood Revitalization Property Tax Programs help promote Revitalization of the (1) inner urban area of the City, (2) Lake of the Forest, and (3) Northwest Area of the City and Vitalization of (1) the K-7 commercial corridor, (2) a large area extending north to I-70 from the inner urban area, and (3) the area adjacent to the Kansas Speedway. The programs provide the opportunity for property tax rebates on the assessed value of qualifying improvements to any property located in one of the program areas. Locating a Property Owner

Contact the Unified Government Base Mapping/GIS at (913) 573-2943. For property in the City of Bonner Springs within Johnson County, contact the Johnson County Register of Deeds at (913) 715-2300 or at rod.jocogov.org. The necessary information to determine property ownership would include the parcel number or street address of the property.
