Pool Cool Program: The Bonner Springs Aquatic Park is constantly trying to find ways to improve our program to be the best it can be. This year, with the help of the University of Kansas Cancer Center & the Kansas Center Partnership; we will be providing an sun-safety program that will be implemented during swim lessons through short safety messages. Group Swim Lessons:
Classes
Group classes will last 30 minutes Monday through Thursday for two weeks. Friday's will be used as weather related make-up days.  

Register
  • Registration begins 10am Monday, May 26th! Come into the Bonner Springs Aquatic Park to see us or register online!
  • Complete a Group Lesson Registration Form
  • Need help deciding what class is right for your child? Fill out these Questionnaires, they'll help! 
  • Registration deadline is the Thursday before the first day of class.

Fees & Times 
  • Teaching Nemo: $20 (resident); $25 (non-resident)

Parent/Child:

Teaching Nemo: This parent/child group lesson is only ONE week long. Bring your child and work together on water orientation and the basics of swimming usch as putting their face in and under water, floating, kicking, and object retrieval. Please note that these lessons are not intended to teach how to swim, but rather to get your child acquainted with the water.

Preschool:

Guppies (3-5 yrs): Students are taught to feel comfortable in the water using assisted skills. Each child must be at least 3 years old before the first class. 

  • Intro to water: Blowing bubbles; putting eyes, nose and face in water; Bobs
  • Swim Skills on Front: Front float with face in; front glide with face in & kick; flutter kicks on front; front crawl arms & kick combined.
  • Swim Skills on Back: Back float; back glide with kick; flutter kick on back; back crawl with arms & kick combined.
  • Additional Skills: Roll from front to back; roll from back to front; elementary backstroke.

Tadpoles (4-5yrs or passed Guppies): Students are taught to feel comfortable in the water using unassisted skills. Each child must be at least 4 years old before the first class, OR have passed Guppies to register.

  • Intro to water: Blowing bubbles through nose; fully submerge head and hold breath.
  • Swim Skills on Front: Front float & glide with face in & kick; front crawl arms & kick combined.
  • Swim Skills on Back: Back float; Back glide with kick; Back crawl with arms & kick combined; Elementary Backstroke.
  • Additional Skills: Change direction while swimming; retrieve object underwater with eyes open; Jump into 4ft water.

Levels

Level 1 (6 & up): Students are taught to feel comfortable in the water using unassisted skills. Must swim all strokes 5ft without teacher's assistance. Each child must be at least 6 years old before the first class, OR have passed Tadpoles.

  • Intro to Water: Submerging entire head; Opening eyes underwater; Bobs
  • Swim Skills on Front: Front float; front glide going into front crawl; front crawl arms & kicks combined.
  • Swim Skills on Back: Back float; back glide into back crawl; back crawl arms & kicks combined; elementary backstroke.
  • Additional Skills: Open eyes underwater; change direction while swimming.

Level 2 (6 & up): Students become more comfortable with basic strokes and skills. Must be able to swim all strokes half way across pool without teacher's assistance. Child must be at least 6 years old and able to perform skills in Level 1.

  • Intro to Water: Fully submerge and hold breath; Blow bubbles through nose.
  • Swim Skills on Front: Front float; front glide going into front crawl; front crawl arms & kicks combined.
  • Swim Skills on Back: Back float; back glide into back crawl; back crawl arms & kicks combined; elementary backstroke.
  • Additional Skills: Treading water; Beginnings of Rotary Breathing.

Level 3 (6 & up): Students become more comfortable with strokes and fundamental skills. Must be able to swim all strokes across the pool. Child must be at least 6 years old and able to perform skills in Level II.

  • Swim Skills on Front: Front crawl with mediocre rotary breathing; Front glide into crawl; Beginnings of Breast Stroke.
  • Swim Skills on Back: Back crawl; Back glide into crawl; elementary backstroke.
  • Additional Skills: Head first entries from the side in sitting and kneeling; Tread water; Jumping into deep water; retrieve submerged object; Bob towards safety.

Level 4 (6 & up): Students develop confidence in skills learned and improve other aquatic skills. Must be able to perform strokes 1 1/2 laps. Child must be at least 6 years old and able to perform skills in Level III.

  • Swim Skills on Front: Front crawl with exceptional rotary breathing; Breast Stroke.
  • Swim Skills on Back: Back crawl; Elementary Backstroke.
  • Additional Skills: Feet first surface diving; headfirst entries standing; Treading water using two different kicks; Beginnings of side stroke; and Butterfly kick.

Level 5 (6 & up): Students develop confidence in skills learned and improve endurance. Must be able to perform all strokes with ease for 2 laps. Child must be at least 6 years old and able to perform skills in Level IV.

  • Swim Skills on Front: Front crawl with exceptional rotary breathing; Front flip turn; Breast Stroke; Side Stroke.
  • Swim Skills on Back: Back crawl; Elementary Backstroke; Back flip turn.
  • Additional Skills: Deep & shallow angle diving going into a glide and stroke; Treading water; Butterfly body motion.


Private Swim Lessons 
Private swim lessons are for all ages and offer a one-on-one approach for learning to swim. Private lessons are tailored to the swimmer's personal goals and needs and are by appointment only. Lessons last 30 minutes.

Fees
 
  • $15/lesson for Residents
  • $20/lesson for Non-Residents
